I am quite sure NT re-sells FORE ATM equipment and they have an agreement with SHVA, also. They do manufacture some networking equipment, but not carrier class ATM. I own NT and have for some time. I think they are ahead of LU in data networking and can easily see them acquiring ASND. Bay is a disaster and they want a lot of money. NT can put it's marketing muscle behind the GRF, and get a much better product package through acquiring ASND versus BAY. I believe I will be owning more NT in the future, as I own more ASND via Cascade.

As to NT/ASND - NT sells (but may not actually make their own) ATM equipment and access servers.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion on this issue. Here's the original press release from long ago.

Northern Telecom and FORE Systems Partner
to Deliver End-to-End ATM Solutions

Washington D.C. - January 24, 1995 - Northern Telecom, a leading global
manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, and FORE Systems, Inc., the
worldwide leader in local area networking products based on asynchronous
transfer mode (ATM) technology, today announced a joint agreement with the goal
of delivering seamless, end-to-end ATM solutions. The agreement capitalizes on
each company's respective strengths and includes technology transfer, joint
development, and joint sales and marketing.

First, Northern Telecom has become a ForeThought Partner. FORE Systems'
ForeThought software will be added to Northern Telecom's Magellan Passport
and Concorde switches, effectively moving FORE's advanced local area network
and wide area access ATM functions into the wide area backbone network. These
functions include switched virtual circuits (SVCs), IP multicasting, LAN Emulation,
automatic network configuration, intelligent optimized routing, and link load
balancing. Additionally, elements of FORE's ForeView network management
software will be incorporated into Northern Telecom's carrier network
management system.

Second, joint development activities are part of the relationship. Based on
cooperation between the two companies, FORE and Northern Telecom will
introduce a number of new WAN features and products, with initial deliveries
during 1995.

Third, Northern Telecom and FORE will cooperate in joint sales and marketing,
taking advantage of the companies' complementary skills. Together, the companies
will provide complete wide area ATM solutions to key customers including
carriers, cable companies, competitive access providers, and end users building
enterprise networks.

"Easy provisioning and management of end-to-end ATM services are primary
objectives for most carriers, and important goals of this relationship," said Klaus
Buechner, Group Vice President, Northern Telecom Multimedia Networks. "By
leveraging FORE Systems' leadership in ATM LANs and WAN access, and our
strong presence in central office switching, we can bring a unified wide area
network solution to the market."

"We are extremely pleased to announce our partnership with Northern
Telecom," said Dr. Eric Cooper, FORE's chairman and CEO. "FORE expects to
realize benefits from this partnership in the areas of wide-area ATM product
development, marketing, and sales activities, and anticipates these benefits will
continue for the long term. We look forward to bringing a superior end-to-end
ATM solution to enterprise and carrier customers."

Northern Telecom is a leading global manufacturer of telecommunications
equipment, providing products and services to telephone companies, cable
television companies, corporations, government agencies, universities, and other
institutions worldwide. In addition to the Magellan Concorde and Passport
switches, the corporation's portfolio of data and broadband multimedia switching
products includes the Magellan Gateway, the DPN-100 frame switch, and
Magellan Access Switch for remote and branch offices. The corporation had 1993
revenues of $US 8.15 billion and employs approximately 58,000 people
worldwide.
