John, in some indirect ways this actually does apply to FON, since their proposed new ION platform falls into that gray area that is unresolved at this point, at least in my eyes, as to whether it will home to SS7 or ITU gatekeeper functions. More likely, both. In any event, that was a good article, thanks.

How could I have omitted DSC (now a proposed addition to Alcatel)? They were involved as a party to the highly contentious national SS7 collapse about eight years ago, weren't they? If you recall, that was the event that caused a large part of the country to be flooded with electrical busies leaving long distance callers stranded in their tracks. The lawyers didn't mind sorting that one out, though.

Your Tekelec article brings out an interesting and leading question, and one that could be used to fuel some speculation:

"Who's really more important to the phone company, Cisco or Tekelec?"

And what business is Cisco striving to penetrate? Consider that DSC is being bought by Alcatel, and Tandem was merged into Compaq...
