Jim, why don't you try a board that allows for over-clocking CPU and BUS speeds. Very economical way for a big performance hit--cocaine for your PC. Careful though Intel is on a zero tolerance drug policy. Some of Intel's chip cannot be over-clocked.

Try some of these pages:

>>What speed/performance gain is there from P166 to 233mmx?<<

Approximatyely 50% About 35% is from an the increase in clock speed and about 15% for the increase in level one cache size.

I also suggest you look at the "Benchmark Score Comparison Surveys" at the System Optimization Information web site at
sysopt.com They have a lot benchmark scores there for various CPUs. However, they don't supply an executive summary and it takes a long time to make sense out of all of the data they provide.

Networm, are there any web sites that summarize benchmark results in a format that can be quickly read and interpreted?

Its a cheap (~$120) upgrade and the 233MMX will give you approximately the same as a PII233. IF this is enough for your needs during the next six to 12 months, then its a very sensible upgrade.

The only question I might have concerns the performance characteristics of the mobo. BTW there's major price delta between the options you describe, better decide what your requirements and budget are.
