"Taiwan has just fallen off a cliff," said Mark FitzGerald, who tracks
the semiconductor equipment industry for Merrill Lynch (San
Francisco). Much of the drop in wafer demand has happened in just
the last few weeks, he added.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), based here, the
largest of the pure-play foundries and a bastion of hope amid Asia's
turmoil, is operating at roughly 80 percent fab capacity, officials
confirmed. TSMC started the year at 100 percent capacity. Managers
at Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. and Singapore's Chartered
Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. reported their foundries are
operating at about 80 percent capacity levels as well.
