>>A person shorting a stock sells the stock. The more sellers you have the lower the price goes.<<

Ah, I got it. Thanks.

More on short selling-
Short sellers can only short on the uptick, but I've seen (or at least imagined) that they have a very interesting and effective strategy as follows:
a) sell short on the uptick, and put a big sell order in at the asking price
b) Mary Jane sees the big sell order, and decides that the smart thing to do is get out NOW, so she sells at the bid.
c) Harvey W comes by and decides he really wants the shares, so he puts in a buy order to split the spread.
d) Joe Schmoe goes to buy, and he sees a fair number of shares on the bid, and he sees Harvey's few shares at the ask, so he places an order to pick up Harvey's shares. Ahaa! Another uptick, and those 100K shares that the short sellers had for sale at a higher price slide down 1/8 or so, and more shares are shorted.

Pretty soon all the buyers get scared out, until such time as some big buyers come around and view the outstanding fundamentals of the company. Then we get the short squeeze. But by that time the price could have dropped a great deal and many months could have gone by.

I don't know if this sort of scenario really happens, but I've seen several occasions where I thought this was happening. And this is what may be ailing my SFY. Oh how I wish some white knight would come by and see the value... (but be careful about SFY, there is presently some controversy surrounding the status of their reserves).
