Greg, As I said earlier, the entire Biotech therapeutics area is fair game (and I think that is why DR sees LGND's STAT effort increasing to 50% of their total effort).

Most Biotechs target interferons, interleukins, or growth factors as therapeutic agents. LGND has shown that a tiny molecule can mimic the effects of the much larger proteins (polypeptide hormones). The small molecules can be tinkered with extensively (by organic chemists) at a low cost but high throughput 9and of course they can be taken orally).

The discovery opens up a whole new approach. Most did not think that such an approach was feasible. The upcoming Science paper will create quite a bit of excitement in the scientific community and the big boys (pharmas) will take note.

I still suspect that SBH downplayed the combination of genomics with combinatorial chemistry because this new approach is so powerful and the appropriate gene products (ligand and receptor combinations) are well known.

Speaking of Biotech therapeutics, it looks like merger mania continues to have an impact. Latest rumor is that Astra is in talks with MRK to end their joint venture. Buyout from Astra would allow MRK to expand Biotech alliances and Astra would be free to merge with pharma of similar size. Details at:
