Toshiba expects slight drop in sales this year
The New Straits Times

TOSHIBA Sales & Services Sdn Bhd expects a slight drop in its overall sales this year from RM220 million in 1997 due to tough market conditions.

Nevertheless, its managing director K. Takagi said the company would continue to focus on products with potential like air-conditioners, television sets and VCD (video compact disc) players to improve its market share.

"The demand for air-conditioners is growing due mainly to the hot weather. So does demand for digital products like VCD and DVD (digital versatile disc) players."

Toshiba now controls 40 per cent of the DVD market and 30 per cent each for air-conditioners and television sets. The local DVD market is estimated to be around 20,000 units annually.

Speaking to reporters yesterday after the soft launch of Toshiba's latest VCD player, TVD-860K, in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, Takagi said air- conditioners and television sets were the major contributors to the company's sales revenue.

"Both products make up 30 per cent each of our total sales while DVD accounts for about 15 per cent. The rest come from other products including the VCD."

On the new VCD player, Takagi said the company expected the model to increase its share in the local VCD player market - estimated at RM100 million annually - by another five per cent.

He said Toshiba had already captured 10 per cent market share, adding that a two-month promotional campaign via both printed and electronic media, would be taken to achieve the target.

"Some RM200,000 has been set aside for the campaign. We are hopeful of selling about 200 units of TVD-860K per month."

The allocation is part of the company's RM5 million expenditure for advertisements and promotional programmes this year.

Takagi said it was not impossible for the company to attain the 15 per cent target in view of the greater demand for VCD players in the country, which is about 150,000 units per year.

TVD-860K, now available at RM1,035, offers minimum distortion, clearer image and purer sound, even from old or scratched discs.

The model features a three-disc option allowing users to either watch their favourite movies, listen to compact discs or karaoke songs.
