Intel will not abandon the low end because it does not want its competitiors to establish a major foothold in any market segment.

Intel's manufacturing and marketing expertise give it a unique opportunity to make decent profits at the low end and simultaneously insure that their (Intel's) competitors make little or no profits.

Intel is playing both a good defensive game as well as a great offensive game.

Jim,
Letting a competitor have the low end of the market is, IMO, very risky. Remember when the U.S. automobile industry abandoned the low end to the Japanese; and when the U.S. electronics industry abandoned the low end to those cheap Japanese transistor components.
Jack
