Chuca, The NiS fusion is a solvent to dissolve all the PGMs and gold after which the mass is dissolved for AA, the final mass can also be dealt with via XRF before the AA. They would have to first do some wet chem qualitative chem to look for large amounts of interfering stuff and tailor the assay to stop that interference. Many of thes special steps are guardedsecrets of the labs, and you often get labs founded by people who do their PhD on it and then exploit their discovery.
NA, XRF though have largely overtaken the field. FA hangs on due to it's cheapness. There is a project at LLNL to get samples prepared by other labs and placed in small compartments on a carrier, like 35MM film, each with a data code on it so that a large number can be shipped to a $10 million machine which will probe the samples with a beam and then go to the next. The machine is too big for most labs so they are trying to fully automate it this way.
Go to www.llnl.gov and hunt around. I would give you the exact URL, but I am going out right now. Later today I will hunt it up if you have not already done so.
