The undocumented stuff is of much more interest to people developing device drivers, who of course are not in competition with Microsoft. So in short the implication that there is something sinister here is nonsense.

That's pretty much my belief as well. With a previous company, I actually was in competition with Microsoft and needed some undocumented functions for mutlitasking, effectively an OS extension. Unfortunately, I couldn't really disagree with Microsoft's reasons for keeping the information undocumented. In fact, when many inexperienced programmers started trying to use undocumented functions for TSRs, software stability really degenerated. Instead of complaining to Microsoft that we needed more people targeting dangerous APIs, I just worked harder to figure out what I needed.
