There is a big difference in the speed at which a window is drawn when using 24 bit color ( 16.8 million colors ) and 8 bit color ( 256 colors ). 8 bit color is much faster than a 24 bit color and is better suited for a trade station. You can easily compare the speed of 8 bit and 24 bit color by running Freecell with your video display configured for 8 bit and 24 bit color and comparing the speed at which cards are moved of the playing area at the end of a winning game.


Not necessarily true. The last video controller design I worked on worked exactly the same speed at any color depth because of how we interleave memory banks. With today's accellerators its a non issue. Any el cheapo video accellerator is more than adequate for 99% of the 2D applications out there...
