Valueman, the Oinkfones[TM] will be a VERY high margin item. Iridium has already figured it out and Globalstar will soon = p---- per minute must start out really cheap to fill the constellations = the handsets will be in huge demand = supply constraint = high price = high margin. As the constellation fills, per minute p------ rise, the handset price will drop, the form factor [funny jargon that one] will improve, functionality will improve and Qualcomm handset sales department will be feeling smug.

Of course, there is no doubt a huge contingent liability sitting on Qualcomm's books = what if they can't get the handsets ready on time and Globalstar is circling the earth with no handsets? There must be an enormous financial penalty on Qualcomm, Orbitel and Telital if that is the case. Enough to keep Qualcomm's share price low. Qualcomm is still a risky business.

Suppose Janet Reno in a fit of consumer envy determines that Qualcomm's IPR is now public property. States have an unfortunate habit of submitting private interests to public confiscation. European states have a long and most grotesque habit of that.
