Paul,

A 166 MHz Pentium MMX will be kept busy servicing the incoming/ougoing bit streams.

A 400 MHz Pentium II with 100 MHz FSB will have plenty of extra cycles to do most other applications.

You have touched on the real value of improved CPU speed and performance.


The real value of the extra CPU speed would be if you could buy the extra speed for less then a standalone modem.

With the price difference of $600 or more, you can buy top of the line V.90 modem and still have $500 left, as opposed to a dubious software solution.
