Sun recognized that their (Sun's) CPU horsepower was getting eclipsed by Intel's IA32 line and wanted to hedge their bets for the 64 bit future with Merced. I do recall MERCED will have 4 parallel FPU execution units, so maybe Intel will make up lost ground when the Merced finally (??) gets out the door. Somebody reported - and I will confirm it - DELL's new catalog lists a full blown 400 MHz Pentium II system for $2299 - including monitor and kitchen sink. Paul
