Acquisition fever:Yahoo! buys eCommerce company for $49 million.

"...Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) has agreed to buy closely-held software company Viaweb Inc. for $49 million in stock, and plans a $45 million charge for its second quarter relating to the acquisition. On Friday, Yahoo! shares gained 2 3/8 to 105.

Yahoo! has been caught up in an escalation of business partnerships and merger activity among Internet search engines as competition for advertising revenue on their sites grows more intense. Last month, Excite Inc. (XCIT) paid Netscape Communications Inc. (NSCP) $70 million to be the exclusive search provider for NetCenter. Earlier in May, AT&T Corp. (T) penned a deal with Lycos Inc. (LCOS) to offer Internet chatting services to compete with Yahoo! and America Online Inc. (AOL).

The proposed purchase of Viaweb will give Yahoo! a leg up in offering commercial services. Viaweb's software allows companies build and maintain Web sites that can engage in electronic commerce.

"With the rapid growth of online commerce, we've had a tremendous demand among businesses of all sizes to establish online stores and to secure distribution on Yahoo!," said CEO Tim Koogle in a statement..."
