Well, the church (Oude Kerk, to specificate) was smack dabbledy-doo in the middle of Amsterdam's righteously riotous redlight district. And I, needless to say, entirely ignored the distractions of ladies of the evening comehitherly gesticulating from their window booths (even the most likely Hungarian one in the nearly nonexistent rayon pink bikini) in my quest to check out those exquisite apses of the Kerk.

Amsterdam is rather like San Francisco (well, more like San Francisco squared) in that it is never ever even remotely "reverent." I mean, we are talking about a town where even the Calvinists at the pinnacle of their most curmudgeonly Calvinism basically wrote off trying to stamp out the world's oldest profession and finally just settled for prohibiting the good ladies from soliciting in front of the church doors on Sundays. Or at least from naming names as the good burghers solemnly marched in for their weekly dose of brimstones. I can well imagine the scene -- "Oh Heeeenryk!! Yooooohoooo!! Heeeenryk!! Henryk Van Steeeeeeeen!! Yes you cutie!! I'm running a Thursday special!!"
