>>This lack of humanity resulted in the deaths of ten Irish hunger strikers, and untold human tragedy among the miners, who really had no other realistic job opportunities. My husband lived in England at the time, and remembers lots of miner suicides because of despair. Seems some of them tried to blow her up a couple of times and succeeded in killing her best friend and political right hand man. NOT TO SHOUT, DUNCAN, BUT I AM CAPITALIZING TO DIFFERENTIATE MY RESPONSE. I THINK WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO AGREE TO DISAGREE ON MAGGIE THATCHER, BECAUSE WE HAVE DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED VIEWS. THE HUNGER STRIKERS WANTED TO WEAR THEIR OWN CLOTHING, AND BE TREATED LIKE POLITICAL PRISONERS, WHICH THEY WERE. THATCHER NOT ONLY INSISTED THEY BE TREATED AS COMMON CRIMINALS, BUT THE BRITISH HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN NORTHERN IRELAND DURING HER TERM IN OFFICE ARE LEGION. BLAIR ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THEY ARE POLITICAL PRISONERS. THAT IS WHY THEY WILL BE RELEASED AFTER THE IRA DECOMISSIONS THEIR WEAPONS. YOU CANNOT SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE THE BRITISH HAD IN NORTHERN IRELAND WITH THATCHER'S TACTICS. SHE WAS NO DIPLOMAT. ANYTIME YOU HAVE A SITUATION LIKE NORTHERN IRELAND, WHERE THE BRITISH CAME IN, TOOK AWAY THE LAND OF THE IRISH, PROHIBITED THEM FROM PRACTICING THEIR RELIGION, WOULD NOT ALLOW CATHOLICS TO EVEN OWN A HORSE, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TERRORISM. ANY POWERLESS PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN CONQUERED WILL REACT IN THE SAME WAY. I don't know if you remember that her downfall started with a plan for a poll tax which was regressive against the poor, which resulted in a protest riot of over 100,000 people. Maggie served longer than any PM this century and never lost an election. She is probably the greatest female leader in history. She lost power due to her long tenure and her stand against political union with Europe. The long knives were out but she chose her successor, defeating her enemies one last time. WHEN OVER A HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE RIOTING IN THE STREETS OVER THE INEQUITIES OF THE POLL TAX, I THINK IT IS DISINGENUOUS TO SAY THAT SHE LOST POWER OVER HER STAND ON THE POLITICAL UNION WITH EUROPE. SHE LOST POWER BECAUSE THE PEOPLE OF ENGLAND HAD FINALLY HAD ENOUGH OF HER ABSOLUTE HEARTLESSNESS. SHE DIDN'T LOSE AN ELECTION BECAUSE HER OWN PARTY TOOK HER OUT FIRST. Unemployment doubled during her first term in office. Due to the failure of socialism. Blair knows that and even gives Thatcher and her policies credit for Britain's economy, unlike Clinton who has had no positive effect on the US economy yet claims credit at every turn. Good thing people don't believe him in any measure. THATCHER DESERVES SOME CREDIT FOR BRITAIN'S ECONOMY, AND I GAVE THAT TO HER IN THE LAST POST. HER REFORMS WHERE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE MOST BLUNT AND CRUEL MANNER POSSIBLE HOWEVER, RUINING COUNTLESS LIVES AND SENDING PEOPLE INTO DESPAIR THAT A MORE COMPASSIONATE LEADER WOULD HAVE BLUNTED. >> and I am so very, very happy that a modern leader like Tony Blair came along who could lead England into the future So are most. Blair is the first modern Labour leader because he adopted Thatcherism wholesale and is building on her reforms, not retreating back to the darkness of Labour past. Thatcher did what most great leaders do - just as she changed her party, bending it to her will, she also changed the opposition, making Blair possible. By any standard, Thatcher modernized British politics and with the US showed the way for the entire World. A great and grand lady, Lady Thatcher. MAGGIE THATCHER REALLY MAKES ME SICK, DUNCAN. SHE HAS BLOOD ON HER HANDS. SHE IS NO LADY.
