TUSTIN, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998--PairGain Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:PAIR - news) Monday announced the shipment of its one millionth DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) unit, further establishing the company as the xDSL market leader.

As worldwide market demand for DSL equipment has increased, PairGain has continued to maintain market dominance and add functionality to its four product lines; HiGain(R) T1/E1 access systems, PG-Flex(TM) and PG-Plus(TM) small subscriber carrier systems, campus area network systems and megabit access solutions. In 1997, a consortium of HDSL vendors including PairGain, Level One Communications, ADC Telecommunications, and Rockwell gave their support to an HDSL2 standards proposal known as OPTIS (Overlapped PAM Transmission with Interlocking Spectra). The ANSI T1E1.4 committee accepted the proposal in March of 1998, and is currently drafting the industry standard for release next year.
HDSL2 will allow telephone companies to achieve the same level of performance using HDSL over a single-pair of copper wires, rather than the two pairs required today.
