Hitachi to shift domestic DRAM production to Singapore

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Hitachi Ltd said it is to shift domestic production of
dynamic random access memory microchips to its joint venture plant in
Singapore.
It said it will shift output from its Hitachinaka plant in Ibaraki, north
of Tokyo, to Hitachi Nippon Steel Semiconductor Singapore Pte, established
jointly with the Singapore government and Nippon Steel Corp.
An earlier Nihon Kogyo newspaper report that Hitachi will shift all DRAM
production at the Hitachinaka plant to Singapore by end-March 2000, was
rejected by the company.
"It is true our main DRAM production will be shifted to the Singapore
plant but we will do so gradually year by year," a company spokesman said.
Hitachi said it will shift domestic production of 64 and 256 megabit DRAM
to the Singapore plant, focusing on production of system large-scale
integrated microchips at its local plants.
Hitachi said DRAM production at its German plant is also to be shifted to
Singapore, with the German plant to focus on production of micro control
units.
