Joe - Re: ". Even under these conditions, Intel manages to
achieve virtual stranglehold on a big part of semiconductor industry. "

Intel dominates the CPU market. They invented the CPU and the CPU market.

They dominate it because they have designed and built and manufactured the best combination of performance, features and availablity in the processor field as well as support circuits and developmental tools.

They were first in the field.

They have remained first.

No other competitor - Cyrix, AMD, Zilog, Motorola, IDT, MIPS, IBM, Inmos, DEC, Tandem, Fairchild, NSM, Hitachi, Texas Instruments, SGS_Thomson, Philips, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, NEC, SUN, etc. - has been able to offer a more compelling device for general purpose computing that customers prefer.

It's that simple.

They won because they wanted to win.

The only other option was losing.

All the competitors lost.

But Intel won.

It's that simple.
