Ken,

I'm sure Citrix satisfies some needs, as long as the combination of the number of users, the required system response time, and application's CPU and storage access requirements can all be satisfied by the server.

Some applications should be run on servers, some should not. Some applications can essentially render a server unavailable to all other users, or slow response time to an unacceptable level. We use a combination of applications servers, database servers, and workstations. Depending on the application and its bandwidth needs, licensing constraints, and maintenance considerations, we put applications on the user desktop or on a server. The balance is continually changing as applications evolve or new applications are installed, system performance improves, and licensing terms change.

I can remember, in 1986, being forced to share, with several hundred users, a simple word processor
running on a DEC VAX. It frequently took several minutes to page down three pages in a six page document. Most painful computer experience of my life! I don't care if they put a smart pigeon in a box to respond to my input . . . as long as the response time is 1/4 second or less!

PS: Does anyone else mind waiting while their internet graphics load or waiting for the SI server to respond to their menu selection? I hate to wait!

Respectfully,
Jack
