Oracle Database For PalmPilot
Newsbytes - June 08, 1998 14:48

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A., 1998 JUN 8 (NB) -- At PC Expo next
week, Oracle Corp. [NASDAQ:ORCL] and 3Com Corp.'s [NASDAQ:COMS] Palm
Computing plan to announce a product billed as the first database to
run directly on a handheld computer, Newsbytes has learned.

In a meeting with Newsbytes today on Oracle's Boston press tour,
Denise Lahey, VP, Embedded Database Technologies, divulged that Oracle
will initially produce a Palm Conduit for its Oracle Lite mobile
computing database, to be followed early next year by a "full-featured"
edition of Oracle Lite for 3Com's PalmPilot and Palm III organizers,
as well as for Palm Computing platforms from IBM and Symbol Technologies.

Oracle and Palm will demonstrate the new database technology for
handheld PCs in the 3Com booth at next week's trade show in New York
City, the VP told Newsbytes.

The technology will initially allow for sharing of database information
between a handheld PC outfitted with a Palm Conduit and a notebook or
desktop PC running Oracle Lite.

The subsequent "full-featured" edition of Oracle Lite for PalmPilots
will bring the ability for real-time database synchronization and
replication between a handheld PC and either a notebook running Oracle
Lite, or Oracle's "big" database, according to Lahey.

Oracle is targeting August for release of both the new PalmConduit, and
a previously announced edition of Oracle LIte for WinCE, the Oracle VP
added.

Oracle will also soon be announcing partnerships with other players in
the Windows CE arena, such as HP, Sharp, NEC, and Hitachi, Newsbytes
was told.

Oracle is located at oracle.com on the World Wide Web. 3Com
is at 3com.com .
