OPEC barrel price jumps slightly as new cuts expected: MEES

NICOSIA, June 8 (AFP) - The average reference price for a barrel of
OPEC oil rose to 13.16 dollars in May and new agreements among crude
producers could help strengthen prices in the second half of the year,
an industry newsletter said Monday.

The May average reference price showed an increase of 0.4 dollars from
April, the Nicosia-based Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) reported.

Despite the small jump, the OPEC reference price remained 5.52 dollars
below last year's average reference price of 18.68 dollars, a measure
of the continuing supply glut in the market, the report said.

But MEES predicted that the market "could regain its vigor during the
second half of 1998" as certain key OPEC and non-OPEC producers
announced a new round of cuts last week to follow-up major cutbacks in
March.
