NeoMagic <NMGC.O> combines graphics on single chip SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 8 (Reuters) - NeoMagic Corp. said it had begun initial deliveries of the first multimedia computer-accelerator that integrates high-speed graphics, audio, video, and digital video playback capabilities on a single chip. NeoMagic said its MagicMedia 256AV, a 256-bit chip with over 21 million transistors, is the first of a new family of chips that are specifically built to speed the graphics peformance of the latest generation of multimedia notebook PCs. The chip provides the internal bandwidth to handle and convert data into high-performance audio and high-resolution video, giving notebook computer users many of the same powers found in high-performance desktop computers, the company said. NeoMagic said the new all-in-one chip's performance has 3.2 gigabytes, or billions of bits of bandwith capacity. By contrast, memory-only chips such as 64-bit DRAM chips provide less than 200 megabytes, or millions of bytes, while dual-channel chips using Rambus Inc. <RMBS.O> technology provide roughly 1.5 gigabytes, the company said. "NeoMagic's delivery of the 256-bit architecture cracks the bandwidth bottleneck wide open," said Ron Jankov, the general manager of NeoMagic's Multimedia Products unit. Scott Hudson, an industry analyst at In-Stat Group, said that combining computer memory into graphics chips will become the dominant method in the chip industry over time. He estimated that such embedded computer memory will grow to 83 percent in 2002 from 39 percent of total units in 1998. NeoMagic stock was up 1-1/16 at 17-1/16 in regular early on Monday. 10:21 06-08-98
