<<<OFF TOPIC>>>

after reading your note about all the wonderful things your PC world is doing with single copies of the data I bet your Enterprise Server MIPS, ie IBM Servers (mainframes), are growing exponentially. Either that or your IT people support costs are out of control.

I don't understand your comment. We use a browser interface (Netscape) to a metadatabase that is replicated at multiple sites on a firewall-protected company intranet. Metadata (attributes like author, key words, report number, title, date of origination, product number, etc.) supports searches and links the user to the server where the data is stored. Data is stored on servers that support greatest number of users of that data. If people at several sites need frequent access to same data, that file is replicated (but protected against alteration). It is a distributed library system. No mainframes involved.

One of many reasons for doing the above: Very, very, very, expensive to catch problems in integration and test that are the result of someone using an obsolete version of a drawing or specification. Another reason: Cuts the time an engineer spends looking for information, acquiring it, and verifying that it is current from hours (sometimes days) to minutes.

Respectfully,
Jack
