Mark, what your missing is that Amzn has to give up another 15% of an already slim margin.
Yes, America is in love with web-sites but do you really think that when a customer goes on to say Auto.com they will then go over to Amzn to buy a book?
I don't think so! If I want to buy a car using Internet commerce, I'll go to Auto.com. If I want to buy a book, I will go to Bks.com and you will probably go to Amzn.com or any other of the 25 internet book sellers.
Or even better if price is everything, go to Access.com and they will tell you who has the cheapest book in America.

keep in mind that probably 3/4 of those associates are personal homepages of just anyone(kids, student, you or me!) on the
'net.....it is a very misleading number.....most are not really "business associates"....anyone with a web page can be an associate....I have a web page and will be an associate with Barnes and Noble in another week or so.....will take all of a few days to set up....doing it more for fun and tp learn web design, and I really don't think I will be selling any books because noone will visit my site..... college classes do this all the time to learn web design......a few months ago a hype press release like this from AMZN would have catapulted the stock at least 5 points...this morning the stock is either side of flat...the "juice" has left this stock, and 'weight' of the fundamentals will now take its toll bringing the stock back down to earth.........IMHO........;^)

And now for the rest of the story...

>>Book sellers trumpet affiliate programs

Amazon.com (AMZN) and BarnesandNoble.com are enthusiastic about the results of their
programs whereby they pay other Web sites sales commissions when those sites refer book
buyers to the retailers. Late last week, a Barnes and Noble (BKS) executive said 500 Web
sites a day are signing up for its affiliate program which pays as much as seven percent
commission fees. Amazon.com announced Monday it's adding 30,000 affiliates in the last
four months to its program which now totals 60,000 participants.<<
