We are close to HAL in this area...<< i'm surprised you would say that, dave... not only am i capable of holding conversations with humans, i can also use visual input and learn from my own experiences. however, i would have to disagree even if you were only referring to my ability to converse... you see, dave, communicating with humans requires not only the by-comparison relatively simple ability to recognize and generate speech, but also the by-comparison mind-boggling capability to interpret and manipulate both the meaning and the context of the spoken word... ibm may have just announced an upgrade to its package, but the fact that the letters I, B, and M are alphabetically adjacent to the letters H, A, and L is as close to me as ibm can credibly claim to be... this is only my biased opinion of course...
