Germany - Deutsche Telekom Climbs On
Board DSL Bandwagon

June 8, 1998

FRANKFURT, GERMANY, Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : After watching
what appears to be the whole of the US telecommunications industry rolling out DSL
(digital subscriber line) technology, Germany's Deutsche Telekom is starting its own
DSL service.

To be known as Telekom Service Line (TSL), the German service will eventually be
available to almost every telephone subscriber in Germany with a standard copper wire
from the phone exchange to their home or office.

Speaking at the company's annual shareholder meeting yesterday, Ron Sommer,
Deutsche Telekom's chairman, said that the TSL service will be offered to both business
and residential users, the latter of which will be able to download high resolution movies
or high quality audio signals on demand.

According to Sommer, TSL will offer a complementary service to ISDN (integrated
services digital network), which has been a great success in Germany these last few
years.

Sommer did not give any timescales for the introduction of the DSL service, however.
Newsbytes understands that the service will start being rolled out across Germany later
this year.
