Paul -
All good points on the IA32 line. The reality is that almost all of the server applications of any size can be accomplished by that architecture now.

I think the real issue is development of a reliable 64 bit architecture for the back end and middle tier of tomorrow's apps, not today's needs. 32 bit architectures will continue to have problems with large memory addressing - not insurmountable but a long way from seamless. As you point out, Intel had the 64 bit mindshare up until recently. I think they need to do more than just drive IA32 if they want to maintain that momentum over the next 3 years.

My sense is that a unified 64 bit architectural effort among the big players, rather than a Merced or Alpha tussle, will do the most to advance industry acceptance of these platforms.

Paul, Re: "Further, Intel will be rolling out Profusion-based 8-way servers in the latter part
of this year as well."

Where'd the name Profusion come from? Code name? I read that the 8-way concept came from Corollary, a startup in Southern California that Intel bought because of their 8-way design.

Re: "Down the road - 1999 - Wlillamette will be introduced and a major improvement
in server and workstation performance will be delivered."

What does Willamette bring to the WS and server party?
