RE: <<Gary, Re: "What would prevent Merced(or whatever follows it) being used as the processor for S390 ?"
How do you get around the fact that there are no plans to run MVS native (or, emulated, for that matter) on Merced?>>

Is that a realistic possibility? How much work would it be to do this? I've always thought that the key is the operating system in most similar situations, not the processor. Just look at the Wintel vs Apple-IBM-Motorola fight. The PowerPC was clearly faster than the Pentium, but it didn't run Windows natively, so now it's just a sideshow.

About mainframes: I remember being on a conference call with an analyst (I think he was from IDC) where he talked about upcoming super-servers with 100+ CPUs, mostly running Unix. He seemed to feel that they will cut into mainframe sales. His idea was that Unix superservers are improving faster than mainframes and will eventually displace them for most purposes, while the Unix servers where themselves being displaced at the low end by NT-on-Intel servers.
