Kemble,

I have seen Dell ads recently comparing Dell and Sun workstations. Same performance, factor of two less expensive. Am pretty sure Michael's comment about workstations referred to Sun, IBM, HP, and DEC.

I also believe that Dell competition has hurt the other PC vendors far more than they want to acknowledge publicly. It is surprising that so few people appreciate the meaning of Compaq barely breaking even and IBM and HP profits dropping while Dell exceeds very high sales and earnings forecasts. People who are value unsubstantiated opinions more than facts will fail to recognize what this implies for the future.

Jack

Good morning Kemble,

Yes, I remember MD talking about exposing the pricing ripoff. Now here's something to contemplate: servers have been cash cows for companies like Compaq. Now, profit margins will suffer a big drop as they respond to the Dell threat. But Dell suffers no decrease in margins because it is moving into a new niche and applying the old margins. In other words, this is going to put a sizable crimp into the profits (such as they are) of Compaq and other server manufacturers.

TTFN,
CTC
