I'm not a Telco engineer but here what it looks like to me.

CIENA's MultiWave Metro will be deployed as a series of optical add/drop multiplexer nodes connected by a two fiber ring. It provides up to 24 duplex channels over a single fiber pair, enabling up to 120 Gb/s of traffic.

GigaMux now features an Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) using a passive photonic module which enables Metro network operators to deliver bandwidth on short notice to customers located along a fiber run. Osicom has also announced that GigaMux's capacity has doubled to support 32 channels for a total system throughput of 80Gb/s.

The MultiWave Metro supports various network topologies, protocols and protection arrangements all on the same fiber pair and in the same node.

Osicom's ADM approach also helps protect the investments of a network operator's existing SONET deployed network. It achieves this by enabling such networks to add SONET rings to existing fiber routes without adding fiber pairs and accommodates modular network expansion by adding one ring at a time.

Cienna =two fibers
Osicom= one fiber

GigaMux's ADM capability supports inter-ring traffic, or trans-muxing, where data from a node in one ring needs to be routed to a node in a second ring.

Cienna=one node
Osicom=transmuxing, multiple nodes

MultiWave Introduced June 8th. Untested and untried
GigaMux introduced months ago, field tested by WCOM and NASA

I am sure the Cienna Metro DWDM will eventually compete with Osicom,
but..

1. <<MultiWave Metro is expected to be commercially available during
the second half of 1998. >> This is a future, not current
competition.

2. We don't know the price yet. Osicom unequivically stated in the
conference call that they have unique intellectual property in the
Gigamux. This may play out as a better price vs. any FUTURE
competitors.

3. It is not clear if the entry price will be low, although the
phrase <<It provides up to 24 duplex channels>> does imply that
it comes in various flavors/sizes.

4. It is not clear that the Ciena product supports all digital
data formats. Is it a passive or active device? If it is an
active device, it may only support the formats listed in the news
release.

5. This is a big, important market. Longs knew there would be
competition eventually.

6. Ciena seems a good investment. No argument there.

Thanks for the post. Eager to hear more.
