I'm so sad that no one has mentioned the sheer joy of reading! Being intellectual or literate is fine, but what about just reading for pleasure? I never go anywhere without a book in the car and one in my pocketbook. I admit I'm a compulsive reader and a lot of it is fiction and not always of great literary import but I read about 5 books a week just because I love it. I read no newspapers (gave them up when I started yelling at them over my morning coffee--) and very few magazines and outside of NBA games I don't watch TV, so I'm not terribly well-rounded, I know. But I'm never bored or lonely! And I'm thinking about Tom's questions of the ten books that should be required.....
I'd love to hear from everyone what books or authors most affected them, particularly early on..I'm sure they're all different.
