Andrew,

I here what you are saying, and you are right!

The cost of a square foot of one of America's new fabs costs about $3000.00/sq'(this is the structure I am talking about). The amount of energy used for that same square foot is ~ 250 watts continuous.

When you throw in the cost of equipment, facilitation of the equipment, gases (a corrosive gas line can cost $75,000 "each" if you include the gas cabinet) and utilities needed to make the equipment useful, it is understandable that a product has to be very successful to make that company money. You simply can not make mistakes with your wafers i.e., mis-process, drop them or shake them

To be able to simplify any of the above steps insures a better chance to be profitable.
