NBTel Selects Newbridge Networks to Deliver a Managed Broadband Access Network

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998-- Newbridge (TSE:NNC. - news; NYSE:NN - news) Innovative Carrier Selects ADSL Solution to Assist in Delivering High-Speed Multimedia Services to its Customers.

Newbridge Networks today announced it has been selected to supply managed multiservice access equipment to support NBTel's Vibe(TM) service. The enhancement of NBTel's network has already resulted in multi-million dollar commitments.

Based on the industry-leading MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch and managed multi-access architecture, the Newbridge solution will enable NBTel to fully exploit the high-growth market for broadband services to businesses as well as 'on-line' consumer households. In particular, the recently introduced Newbridge(R) asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) solution enables NBTel to rapidly deliver a diverse portfolio of high-speed multimedia services to its broad customer base from the NBTel VideoActive(TM) network, a fully digital fiber-optic network. For example, NBTel's Vibe service enables customers to do everyday things better from their home PC, such as track the latest news coverage, play interactive video games, view videos, manage phone services, pay bills, or surf the Net - all at speeds up to 150 times faster than those normally available through a 28.8 Kbit/s modem. NBTel has very aggressive plans for additional value-added services to be delivered over this managed broadband infrastructure.

''We carefully evaluated the solutions presented by a number of vendors and determined Newbridge to be the best vendor to satisfy our requirements for a managed multi-service, multi-access solution,'' said Peter Jollymore, Vice President Planning and Marketing, NBTel. ''The MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch is an integral component of our overall broadband network architecture. In conjunction with our key network partners, NBTel will be able to deliver cost-effective business and residential services across our VideoActive network. Flexible multi-service options and simultaneous delivery over ADSL are the key business drivers behind this large network purchase decision.''

The Newbridge ADSL solution offers unparalleled scalability, manageability and support for value-added services, integrating high-density ADSL line cards into the proven MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch. With the addition of ADSL, Newbridge strengthens its leadership in DSL technologies. Newbridge currently has the largest installed base of DSL network termination units -- over 350,000 lines -- with proven field performance. The addition of integral xDSL transmission technology to the high-capacity ATM switching platform increases the flexibility of service offerings and helps service providers to continue optimizing their installed copper lines -- delivering next generation services over the installed infrastructure of twisted copper pair wires.

The MainStreetXpress multiservices, multi-access switched architecture is the industry's only true broadband multi-services solution. It has been adopted by service providers worldwide to deliver a broad range of services - including native cell relay, frame relay, advanced private line, LAN internetworking and Internet Protocol (IP) -- over a single, unifying, fully-managed ATM infrastructure. The fully integrated ADSL solution comprises the following components: an eight-port ADSL line card for the MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, a family of ADSL modems and corresponding POTS splitters, the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, and the MainStreetXpress Service Subscription Manager.

The Newbridge management software and ADSL products provide customers with the ability to dynamically select content provider services and enable network providers, like NBTel, and content providers to work in a very flexible management model. This model enables such activities as provisioning, billing, and line maintenance -- to be partially or completely partitioned as residential and business users demand.
