Larry, cynical thought: Buy TI dram, get 2 US Senators in the bargain? Politics counts,specially in the world of dumping, IMF, protectionist strategy, etc. Texas has more political clout than Idaho, although obviously hasn't helped TI in the dram biz. Micron can't afford the TI deal? Don't matter, deal makers get their cut regardless of the soundness of the deal, lots of ways to sell the soundness of a MU-TXN LBO sort of thing. Consolidation makes sense, US on shore production may not.
