The same thing can happen if one is short the stock also if a buy out occurs! With naked calls above the strike price one will be hurt worse than the straight short since the call would not go up dollar for dollar! Another reason to sell calls out of the money verses selling the stock short!

I'm not at all sure I understand what you are getting at in your reference to index/index proxies. Are you suggesting that one short indices like SPY, buy puts on them, or sell naked calls? Regret my obtuseness.
