Elsewhere in the DSL world....Cisco, Taiwanese Partners Push ADSL for Speedier 'Net Access.

By Terho Uimonen
IDG News Service, Taipei Bureau
June 8, 1998

Cisco Systems Inc. and Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (III) late last week agreed to establish a development and testing laboratory here focused on accelerating the adoption of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology for high-speed Internet access.

The lab will be targeted at helping Taiwanese manufacturers incorporate ADSL technology into their offerings, and ensure that the resulting products will be compliant with international standards as well as with Cisco's ADSL architecture products. Cisco will certify tested products with a mark of interoperability, and hopes that Taiwanese companies will help efforts to speed up the adoption of ADSL by consumers worldwide, the company said in a statement.

ADSL technology lets data be transmitted over existing copper telephone lines at speeds of up to 8M bits per second (bps), as compared to the 56K bps that today's fastest PC modems are capable of, Cisco said.

In addition to Cisco and the government-backed III, six Taiwanese manufacturers -- including Askey Computer Corp., GVC Corp. and Zyxel Communications Corp. -- also signed the agreement backing the ADSL lab.

"Internet applications are a primary, global trend," said Yun Kuo, president of III, in a statement. "It is imperative for Taiwan information companies to further their research and development capabilities in this area."

The ADSL lab is the second time that Cisco has teamed up with III to promote technology transfers and joint research and development efforts between itself and Taiwanese manufacturers. The result of the first collaboration -- the Networked Multimedia Lab -- was announced last summer and opened its doors here in March of this year.

Ameritech/RedBack Remember the April 27 WSTL announcement. I wonder if this will generate any revenue?

Ameritech Selects RedBack SMS 1000 FYI

Copyright c 1998 TeleChoice, Inc.

June 9, 1998 -- RedBack Networks, Inc. announced that
Ameritech has selected the Subscriber Management System
(SMS) from RedBack Networks, Inc., to accelerate the
deployment and enhance the scalability of their newly announced
DSL services.

The SMS 1000 can aggregate as many as 4000 DSL virtual
circuits or Frame Relay logical connections over high-speed links
generating from multiple Central Offices. It then converts all
incoming data traffic to IP, and transports it as a single logical
stream to ISP partners or enterprise customers over high-speed
links.

The "front-end processing" performed by the SMS 1000 relieves
the ISP backbone routers of heavy-duty frame translation that
cause congestion on high-volume networks. Thus, ISP partners
and enterprise customers can handle the extra volume of traffic
resulting from broadband access without adding any more router
power to their networks.

The SMS 1000's use of IP as the universal language, allows
Ameritech to integrate DSL users transparently into existing
network management and billing systems, without any costly
conversions or upgrades. SMS 1000 even acts as a RADIUS
client. Ameritech's ISP, Ameritech Interactive Media Services,
and enterprise customers who have standardized on RADIUS
can take advantage of familiar and well-understood tools to
authenticate and manage their DSL-based subscribers and end
users.

The SMS 1000 also supports new deployment models through a
unique capability known as "multiple context." This functionality
enables dynamic provider selection, allowing distribution of
broadband access services to multiple ISPs, and dynamic
service selection, allowing a carrier to effectively "re-target" each
dedicated connection to support multiple services dynamically.

A context is a virtual machine within the SMS 1000 that
provides a separate administrative domain for security,
accounting, and management of a high-speed access network.
Each context contains a unique routing entity, independent
address spaces and forwarding tables, and multiple RADIUS
clients to allow complete and secure data partitioning. The SMS
1000 binds end-user subscribers to the appropriate ISP partner
dynamically during authentication.

Ameritech can use multiple context to connect any end user to
the IP network service of choice. In this way, Ameritech can
enable a single DSL connection to support multiple types of
subscriber services, and associate a range of performance and
pricing levels to each new service.

Dr. Tech, you said on June 4th prior to ALA/DSC news... and then followed up on June 9th with ...So I ASSume that we should still be hearing something this week about WSTL/DSC -DMT and that it may be more than just for BEL?

So we know that WSTL DEFINITELY belongs to BEL for at least CAP, but what does it mean in potential $$$ to WSTL. Since WSTL doesn't want to share ANY INFORMATION with its shareholders we rely 100% on you to provide the necessary info. We as a board can feed the information back to the street..

How big is ICG for WSTL in $$$??? Small, medium or Big $$$???

Can we expect a full blown (what a joke) announcement from WSTL on US WEST (May 28th) .

I am Confused when you say (on May 19th) but you then said (on June 4)<.Remember BEL has alot of DSC equipment.> ... Are you referring to LU using WSTL for BEL as a result of the news released yesterday ...Bell Atlantic to Build Long-Distance Network for Data Lucent Technologies Inc., the top U.S. phone equipment maker, will provide equipment and software for the network in a contract valued at $200 million over five years?

Can we still expect anything from Amertiech or will Alcatel's third generation MTK-20131 DynaMiTe chip keep WSTL from regaining AMeritiech? If WSTL could win back Ameritech...I think that would give the re-birth that WSTL needs.

WE NEED AND APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT...and Friendofthefly...FU. What a joke, insider lawsuit. At this rate there won't be any WSTL shrholders left in a few weeks. Somebody needs to supply the suffering shrholders QUALITY info!
