Good post about the current X86 CPU dynamics at the low end though I would add that IDTI needs to find a large OEM and make a sale(s) for the Winchip II. Apparently that has not happened yet though the timeframe for this was for 2H calender 1998.

Unless we see a bunch of SEC reports showing major insider sales, these IDTI folks are motivated in everyway to establish a viable X86 operating business. (We should know by fall to spring 1999).

Agree on mfg roadmap being to little to late. Why repeat
the same mistake....Get IBM involved from the start and
learn from them as part of the process. If they try and
just use IBM as a backup then they are in denial concerning
mfg ability.IBM can make the WCII now and fast and time
to market is the most important factor .Let Glen Henry
keep cranking out new designs and let the oregon fab learn
how to make cpu's but also get IBM involved right now...
not as a backup ... THIS IS ARROGANT GREEDY STUPID POLICY
comon IDT MGMT BE HONEST AND DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE COMPANY

You paint a bleak, but possible scenario. IDT hopes that the 3DNow! improvements (2x on graphics) and improved general performance will be enough to stimulate market demand. The parts are said to compare (slightly surpass) the performance of AMD's K6+ 3DNow! and be superior to Intel's Celeron parts.

I think a lot depends on how much AMD pushes the 3DNow! brand recognition and how well the parts are reviewed. If the trade press is favorably impressed and they have 266 Mhz parts in quantity, then things will brighten up. IDTI says that the parts are 40% smaller than the K6+. I don't know how well they compare to the Celeron parts. The current generation of Celeron parts are not as high of performers as the K6 and certainly not the K6+ or WC 2. That will change quickly as Intel rolls out their new Cleron with integrated L2 cache.

No doubt about it, IDTI needs to perform quickly and with very little room for problems. They say that they are focused on getting the WC 2 ramped quickly and up to higher speed grades. A large part of the fate of the company hangs in the balance and investors will soon see if Perham and company have the right stuff or just pipe dreams.
