ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1998-- Direct Connection of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) to GigaMux DWDM Optical Networks Eliminates Need for Costly SONET Cross Connects Osicom Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:FIBR), today announced another technological breakthrough in its GigaMux(tm) Metro DWDM product family. Using Osicom's new Electrical Photonic Concentrator (EPC) technology, Metro service providers will for the first time be able to provide direct optical and electrical interfaces to customer premise equipment to carry voice, video and data traffic at much lower cost across their networks. EPC eliminates the need for costly SONET cross connects and ATM interface equipment. EPC is a patent pending combination of optical and electrical technology that allows the division of 2.5 Gbps DWDM channels into sub-rate channels of varying bandwidth while maintaining total protocol and format transparency. This allows direct connection of routers, Gigabit Ethernet and ATM switches, and SONET add-drop multiplexers to GigaMux DWDM optical networks. For example, 512 customer premise devices using OC-3 interfaces can be transported over a single fiber. According to Dr. Xin Cheng, President of Osicom and a pioneer in photonic networking technologies, "The implications of EPC technology are enormous in terms of how fast DWDM will penetrate the Metro markets." Dr. Cheng continued, "Amidst the chaotic environment of unpredictable demand for bandwidth as well as the mix of services, price-per-channel has been a principal barrier to deployment of DWDM in the Metro markets. Because GigaMux equipped with EPC extends bandwidth granularity, Metro service providers can now swiftly deliver an expanded mix of services at affordable prices to those customers who don't need a full 2.5 Gbps DWDM channel over existing fiber." Osicom is demonstrating GigaMux EPC technology this week at Supercomm '98, in addition to its 32-channel GigaMux system and optical add-drop modules. GigaMux EPC products are available now for customer shipment. About GigaMux EPC Osicom's GigaMux line of DWDM transforms existing fiber from a dedicated, single-application medium into a versatile conduit capable of simultaneously transporting up to 32 independent optical channels, thus increasing the total bandwidth of a single fiber from 2.5 Gbps to 80 Gbps. The data format and bit-rate transparency designed into GigaMux is also extended to sub-rate channels. Further, GigaMux's extensive management capability seamlessly extends to each sub-rate channel thus allowing comprehensive diagnostic reporting and continuous performance monitoring of each sub-rate channel. Since EPC eliminates the need for costly ATM switches and SONET multiplexers, it not only reduces the cost per channel by an order of magnitude, but also eliminates the delay and associated latency in the network. Elimination of latency is critical to transporting time sensitive data such as IP telephony and digital video. The ability to carry data in its native format also reduces the number of devices required to aggregate traffic onto a service provider's network, improving the reliability of the overall network by substantially reducing system complexity.
