There's always a tradeoff for chipmakers between wanting a single source solution and wanting the best of breed for each individual process step. Also, until the NVLS announcement, anyone wanting to do copper would *have* to buy from two suppliers because there *was* no single provider.

Like I said, I don't understand it either, but the Japanese are presenting an awful lot of papers about Al damascene.
