Rude and all, Dow Jones Newswires -- June 9, 1998 Intl Data Corp. Sees Intl PC Demand Growing 9% In 2Q Dow Jones Newswires FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- International Data Corp., an information technology market researcher, expects second-quarter unit volume in the worldwide PC market to grow by 9%. In a press release Tuesday, International Data said the "lukewarm" market picture is related to a continued downturn in the Asia/Pacific region, a soft market for portable computers and channel supply problems in the U.S. International Data said inventory problems have slowed channel ordering and resulted in a more conservative stance on PC manufacturing. The firm said many indirect PC vendors continue to implement programs and practices designed to build products to customer demand and improve inventory levels and efficiencies. International Data expects Western Europe's market to expand by 14% in the second quarter due to low-cost PCs, improving economies in France and Germany and a greater focus from global PC brands. International Data Corp. said it expects vendor unit shipments for the U.S. market to increase 14% in the second quarter due to a strong economy and the low-cost market, but the company said "severe" price pressure will limit revenue and profit growth for most PC vendors. International Data expects unit shipments in Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, to show "slight negative growth," and the firm lowered the 1998 market outlook to 5%. Internaional Data expects the Japanese PC market to grow 2% in 1998 with negative growth in the second quarter. The firm said it believes the shift toward lower prices and more efficient business models favors the largest vendors, who have broader product lines and geographical scope. International Data said Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) will experience the greatest amount of shipment increase during the second quarter, and Compaq (CPQ) should see gains in shipments of portable and consumer systems
