<No ax, I just find it pretty extreme for a company to come out and comment on rumors
one way or another. Within the last 2-3 weeks Dell has been a little too loud trying to keep
their share price up don't you think?>

re DELL a little too loud

I know folks who thought Cassius Clay / Mohammed Ali was "a little too loud". However, as I recall, his "braggin rights" were based on factual achievements, ... just like DELL.

May we assume from the tenor of your posts that you hold a short position in DELL?

As far as DELL squelching the rumor about BA switching vendors, DELL has a very close partnership with BA. If rumors might damage that partnership, it is certainly within the prerogatives of the company to clear the air. I note that BA also denied the rumors, which indicates to me that the relationship is important to them as well.

DELLish, 3.

Techie, you believe it incorrect for a company to combat rumors? I have trouble seeing how this is extreme.

The real problem is that many "Wall Street" people do not take the time to do any serious investigation of DELL. They would rather make generalizations about DELL relative to the PC and other tech companies. DELL finds it necessary to step in every now and then and dispel these unqualified positions.

Most people that follow DELL know this. I'm happy to have been of help in teaching you this as well.

Techie,
Finally someone who noticed the change. I invest in Intel and Compaq rather than Dell. Over the past year, I watched Dell really shine. NOW however I am watching Dell change their strategy. MD is openly bashing the competition. They are selling the sub 1000 computers. They are talking about giving up profits in server market. I ask myself why would MD change so much in a short period of time. I think the answer is in the stock price. I'm sure I'll get flack but at least consider Dell is changing their game plan and ask yourself why.

I'm not crazy enough to say Compaq is leading but I will remind Dellionares that Compaq said they wanted to lower inventory channel which they did. They wanted to focus on two tiers of business: one being the sub 1000 market and the other being the server market. Did ya'll forget the huge GM contract? Expect Compaq to go after many other large contracts once the DEC deal is done.

I woundn't worry if DELL is a little to loud to protect its share price. I just worry when it is too quiet. (then maybe there is some truth to the rumor.) BTW, you seem to be a little too loud to protect your short interest too.
