News June 9, 11:19 Eastern Time HOUSTON (June 9) BUSINESS WIRE -June 9, 1998--Building on its strength at retail, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced its "Built for You" program that allows consumers to purchase custom-configured Presario PCs and provides expanded access to Compaq products. The program, currently rolling out to retailers across the U.S., enables consumers to purchase Presario 5600 Series or 1600 Series PCs with the exact specifications they are looking for, at the retail locations where they prefer to shop. "In conjunction with our retail partners, we have developed a new way for consumers -- particularly experienced PC buyers -- to order their Presario PCs with the features they want," said Michael Larson, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, U.S. Consumer, Compaq Computer Corporation. "This is clearly better than buying direct because 'Built for You' provides our customers with more choices than ever before, giving them the ability to order their custom-configured Presario PCs at great price points, while enjoying the personalized service and convenience of shopping at their favorite retail outlet." Consumers can order a custom Presario from specially designed demonstration computers at Compaq's Custom PC Center, located within participating computer retail stores. With the Custom PC Center, customers can access information on the base Presario models and simply click to upgrade features such as memory, processor speed or DVD-ROM -- and the price of their custom PC is automatically updated on screen with each selection to make the purchase process simple and efficient. Prices for the Compaq Presario 5600 Series start at just $1,749(1) (after $100 mail-in rebate for registering for a 50-hour free trial of Compaq Easy Internet Access (2)) and change depending on the configuration. For just $2,549 (after $100 mail-in rebate) consumers can buy a Presario 5600 Series PC with an Intel(R) Pentium(R) II processor -- 400 MHz, 64 MB of SyncDRAM memory, an 8.0 GB(3) hard drive, 2nd-Generation DVD-ROM (4) drive, cable modem-ready Ethernet port, Digital Creativity Imaging Center with IEEE-1394, Microsoft Office '97 Small Business Edition, and a Presario MV700 17-inch monitor (15.9-inch viewable image area). This system, along with the Compaq-exclusive Instant Internet keyboard, represents the best overall value in the PC industry. The Series may also be configured with an Intel(R) Pentium(R) II processor -- 333 or 350 MHz, hard drives up to 16.8 GB, memory up to 384 MB, and 32X Max CD-ROM drive. A choice of Presario monitors, including the new FP500 Digital Flat Panel Display, and a selection of add-ons such as graphics cards, speaker upgrades, removable storage options and networking options are also available.
