NYSERNet Selects Newbridge Networks as Technology Ally for
Next Generation Internet in New York State
09:09 a.m. Jun 09, 1998 Eastern

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1998--Newbridge(TSE:NNC.)
(NYSE:NN) Newbridge Networks and NYSERNet (New York State Education
and Research Network) today announced an innovative alliance to pioneer new
networking technologies. Newbridge will supply the broadband asynchronous
transfer mode (ATM) network switching solution for NYSERNet 2000, a
high-speed, next generation Internet infrastructure being developed to serve New
York's research and educational institutions. NYSERNet will deploy and test
Newbridge's new networking features and functions on this advanced network,
which is intended to lead the nation in Quality of Service (QoS)-based Internet
Protocol (IP) traffic management.

This will be the Internet industry's first standards-based solution for differentiated
IP services over an ATM infrastructure that is fully manageable and highly
scalable, reliable, secure and cost-effective. The networking innovation making this
possible is called Carrier Scale Internetworking (CSI), which was announced by
Newbridge, Siemens and 3Com in October 1997. It will enable improved
service provisioning and round-the-clock service control, which
cannot be accomplished using the current generation of router-based
networks.
