Tony - Re: " We finally traced it to the Intel 16K DRAM's putting noise on the +5 volt (I think) power bus, and messing up the Hitachi's. "

During 1985, Intel withdrew from the DRAM business. Mostly, they were not cost competitive with the Japanese DRAM manufacturers.

The 16 DRAM, presumably a 2117D, would have been a very old part by that time - introduced in 1977/78.

This part was 12 volt Vdd device, with 5 volt I/O.

Intel did have a very high speed (for that time) 2118 which was a single 5 volt Vdd device.
