The IDC study lags the sales period, so this was not a rehash - their IDC data is maybe a week old. But your point is well taken, and the aggressive price cuts which drove the share gain are not a long-term good business practice. CPQ will lose if it gets into the 'low cost producer' game, except in consumer products where they really are the low cost producer. They need to build a sustainable model around a knowledge-based, services-led product strategy.

CPQ is not nearly as good at self-promotion as Dell. Maybe dumping their old PR firm will help. The new one did such memorable promotions as the 'budwiser frogs'.

Hi John,..Re:<<IDC data>>

I took the IDC data as a report on the breakdown of different product lines with respect to the total market and competitors. I don't know if the product breakdown and market ranking has been tallied previously, especially since CPQ and Dell have different reporting periods. I presume that the report at this time finally takes into account market share and growth and is not necessarily a commentary on earnings just based on the statement below from the report.

According to the latest report from International Data Corporation (IDC)(a), Compaq is number one in both the business and consumer segments in the U.S..

I'm probably wrong, but that is how I viewed the report. Also, data will be released on Dell's market share growth in the laptop market as well so you have something to look forward to. I hear it's pretty good too.

Regards,

Lee
