Compaq To Use Digital's AltaVista Search Engine On New PCs

MAYNARD, Mass. (Dow Jones)--Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) plans to use Digital Equipment Corp.'s (DEC) AltaVista Search site as the primary default search engine in Compaq's new line of Presario desktop PCs.

In a press release Tuesday, Digital Equipment said a button on the Compaq Presario Easy Internet Access keyboard will take users directly to the front page of the AltaVista Search site, which runs on Digital UNIX.

As reported earlier, Compaq introduced a redesigned line of Presario Internet personal computers priced in the $799 to $3,299 range.

Digital Equipment supplies Web-based computing solutions.

rudedog ---That does not like sound that CPQ was able to get down to four weeks inventory ? Between shutting the plants down for two to three weeks , giving boxes away at cost ( sometime below ) and now having to write down inventory by a billion dollars . I am hoping the charge is for equipment that was giving away earlier NOT for equipment still sitting on shelves .
