Clark, I have some sympathy with the concept that IPR can't really be owned. After all, it is really just the identification of phenomena and the manipulation of the world external to ourselves to construct a causal relationship. The philosophical base of it is quite tricky. It is resolved in a typical messy human way which is good enough for our purposes; we agree internationally to respect somebody's ownership of an idea for a limited period of time. I suspect that IPR will have to have a review in years to come, but for the present, the rules are the rules and without property respecting rules, humans will look more like chimps than people. That's why we males wear long sleeved shirts over our hairy arms and cut the hair off our face - try to pretend we are more human than we really are. Tribalists and other kleptocracies can never aspire to more than a transient economic base because if you produce more than your immediate needs, it is certain that somebody tougher will come along and steal it. Hence, development of patent law to try to enhance creation of valuable ideas. As pointed out a few posts back, the USA is the crucible of technological development and more specifically California. Check the NY/Nasdaq Stock Exchange top 200 companies, then do the same for the London Stock Exchange. You'll see the difference. The USA produces technolgy by the truckfull, the UK has banks, insurance companies etc. As a rule of thumb anyway, so don't anybody quote me a few instances. Same for NZ. We chase sheep for a living. Though here and there you will find hot stuff. Fortunately, the USA also has the wherewithal to defend the international patent system and the incentive to do so. I reckon it is well worth getting upset. Then the thieves realize that they better be careful. Mqurice PS: 1 I ain't got no quarrel with no Holyfield [Hollyfield?]. 2 Gregg, Ericsson already blinked. They said cdmaOne wouldn't work, tried to negotiate a licence in Oct 96 I believe and now are begging for a cdma licence overall for cdma2000 [and maybe Bluetooth].
