CTI Subsidiary Opens Additional Clinical Trial Location PR Newswire - June 09, 1998 20:18 ......another site for trial. if they were getting bad results do you think they would keep adding addition medical sites. and would those hospitals allow a non-functional piece of diagnostic eqpt. this continues to get more interesting. curtis ODGEN, Utah, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermal Medical Imaging, Inc. (TMI), an 80% owned subsidiary of Computerized Thermal Imaging, Inc. (CTI) (OTC Bulletin Board: COII), announced today that they have opened another clinical trial site at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida. Mt. Sinai Medical Center joins the three existing sites in FDA approved clinical trials of the TMI Breast Imaging System. The trials have been designed to test the efficacy of the TMI System as an adjunctive device to mammography and clinical examination. The objective is to determine whether the addition of thermal data aids physicians in determining whether a breast lesion is benign or malignant prior to biopsy. The thermal examination involves no radiation exposure or breast compression of the patient. Researchers conducting the TMI trials believe that the system will help physicians provide women with a more accurate breast diagnosis, reducing the large number of benign biopsies. Currently up to 75% of breast biopsies yield benign, or false positive, results. A recent study reported that 47% of women who had a highly suspicious reading reported that three months after a false positive mammogram they had substantial anxiety related to the mammogram, 26% said the worry affected their daily mood and 17% said it affected their daily function. Patients are eligible for enrollment in the study if they have a suspicious breast mass which has been recommended for biopsy. "A non-invasive test that helps us determine whether a mass is benign or malignant would be a great boon for our patients.," said Dr. Lisa Esserman, a radiologist and the principal investigator for the trials at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Mt. Sinai Medical Center performs approximately 100 biopsies monthly, making it an excellent center to test the Thermal Breast Imaging System. The addition of the patients from this facility is expected to be enough to satisfy the FDA approved trial protocol in the near future. Mt. Sinai is the last site planned for the clinical trials. Computerized Thermal Imaging, Inc. develops thermal imaging and associated technologies for use in the enhancement of medical screening, diagnosis and patient management.
